The creamy grochówka is a popular Polish soup prepared with green or yellow split peas. The basic version is usually enriched with diced potatoes, root vegetables, various smoked meat cuts, and marjoram. Because it is inexpensive and nutritious, this pea soup has traditionally been associated with the army, where they still prepare an incredibly rich and dense version that is commonly referred to as grochówka wojskowa (army pea soup). A bowl of this comforting soup is usually served alongside slices of rye bread.
