Pan di sorc is a traditional sweet bread originating from the province of Udine. The dough is made from three different types of flour: wheat, rye, and Cinquantino (short-cycle corn). Corn is called sorc, hence the name. The dough is enriched with fennel seeds, sultanas, dried figs, cinnamon, and walnuts. The sweet bread is round and the crust is dark and fragrant. The crumb is yellow and has a typical aroma of polenta. Although this is a sweet bread, it can also be enjoyed with savory ingredients such as prosciutto. In the past, this rich sweet bread was typically made during the festive Christmas season, and it was baked in the communal village ovens, but nowadays it's baked throughout the year in the area.

This traditional Christmas bread hails from Verona. Its name is derived from the phrase pan d&rsquo;oro, meaning golden bread, a reference to its yellow color which comes from the large amount of egg yolks used in the bread. Pandoro is traditionally baked in a special star-shaped mold. Unlike it cousin panettone, it does not contain any nuts or dried fruit. The original version of this dessert was created in the 18th century, and it was a dish reserved for the aristocracy. The pandoro we know today dates back to 1894, when baker Domenico Melegatti submitted a patent for a large-scale production process for the bread. This sweet, yeasty bread is often sprinkled with powdered sugar, resembling snow on mountaintops. The bread can be served with sauces and creams such as mascarpone, whipped cream, or melted chocolate, while some cooks like to hollow it out, then fill it with custard, berries, or ice cream.

Pandoro

This unusually shaped variety of sweet bread is a staple in Mexican cuisine. It has numerous sub-varieties, so every pan dulce usually has a name associated with its visual appearance, such as conchas (seashells), puerquitos or marranitos (little pigs), ojo de buey (ox eye), canastas (baskets), cuernos (horns), and espejos (mirrors). Pan dulce started when the Spanish brought wheat to Mexico during the Conquest, and a viceroy dipped his bread in a cup of hot chocolate. The people of Mexico were instantly hooked, and later started to establish their baking tradition where they adopted numerous French techniques in dough making, stemming from the French influence in 19th-century Mexico. They started to add their own ingredients such as corn flour, chocolate, vanilla, guava, pineapple, and sweet potatoes. Today, pan dulce is a tradition that is commonly enjoyed with a cup of hot cocoa or coffee, bought for merienda (mid-afternoon snack) in numerous family-owned local bakeries.

This famous Italian sweet bread studded with raisins and candied orange and lemon peels is traditionally enjoyed for Christmas. Often exchanged as a gift among friends and family, panettone represents an act of kindness and a wish for a happy holiday. This delicious treat is typically consumed with hot chocolate, ice cream, or eggnog. Legend has it that panettone was invented by a Milanese noble named Ugheto Atellani as a means of conquering the heart of Adalgisa, the local baker's daughter with whom he fell in love, and the bread was supposedly served at their wedding. At the time - being made with lots of butter, honey, and raisins - it was known as pan de ton, meaning the bread of luxury, hence the name panettone. There are many more stories about the origin of this sweet bread, but regardless of its true origin, panettone remains one of the most popular Italian delicacies as well as one of Italy's most exported products.

Papparoti is a bun originating from Malaysia. Although the papparoti is nowadays trademarked, it started as a new version of roti flatbread which was made into a bun in 2002 by a Malaysian woman. The buns are made with a combination of flour, sugar, yeast, milk, butter, salt, and eggs. Before baking, the papparoti are topped with an icing made from coffee and caramel. Crunchy on the outside and rich and buttery inside, these buns have been popular since 2003, when the first trademarked PappaRoti store opened in Malaysia. It's usually paired with tea or coffee, and nowadays these sweet and salty buns can be bought across Asia, Australia, England, the Middle East, and North America.

This Romanian sweet bread derives its name from the Latin word for Easter. With its round shape, golden crust, and yellow center, pască is said to resemble the Sun and symbolize the rebirth of nature in springtime. The bread is prepared with yeasted dough that is usually flavored with vanilla and citrus juice and holds a delectable filling made with a combination of fresh urdă whey cheese, eggs, sour cream, sugar, and raisins. Modern varieties often add a twist by putting chocolate chips into the filling. Although predominantly sweet, pască also comes in a savory version, and apart from Romania, it is also commonly prepared in Moldovan households. According to Christian tradition, freshly-baked pască should be taken to church on Easter Sunday for the custom of blessing food in hopes of future abundance and prosperity.

The name of this bread is derived from the German words kletzen (dried pears) and brot (bread), pointing to a strong German influence on this dish.

The cake appears under various names throughout Spain, southern France, Portugal, and Latin America - it is often flavored with orange blossom water or rum, while the center is occasionally filled with marzipan or whipped cream. Spanish tradition also suggests hiding a dry fava bean and a king figurine inside the cake. Whoever is lucky to find the figurine is proclaimed king for the day, while the one who finds the bean has to pay for the cake. In Mexico, a figurine of a baby is usually placed inside the bread, symbolizing Jesus in hiding, and the person who gets the piece with the figurine is expected to host a party on D&iacute;a de la Candelaria (Candlemas).
