Haarlem's highest score so far. Gusto opened on the Gedempte Oude Gracht around the turn of the year, and a few weeks in our critic tried the Antep-style lahmacun: 9.29 at €7. You can taste the lamb, the base stays crunchy (the critic calls that the key to lahmacun), and it sat light afterwards. The verdict: the smoothest lahmacun the critic has had in the Netherlands. Back in October 2026 for the rice pudding (sütlaç): 9.28, creamy, the rice well cooked, a slightly burnt top and just enough sugar.

The pistachio gelato scored 9.25 at €3. There is usually a queue, and the critic says it is worth the wait: not sugary, you actually taste the pistachio, and the cone is fresh and crunchy. The only thing between this and a 10 was the lack of real pistachio pieces.

Two pizzas, two scores above 9. The Calabrisella (9.08, €19) is the best pizza our critic has eaten anywhere: a dough with small charred edges, good sauce and cheese, and ricotta with a real chilli kick. The Mortadella pizza (9.04, €21) comes with wasabi ricotta, an odd but pleasant idea if you like wasabi. Note the short opening hours: evenings only, Wednesday to Saturday.

The most reviewed place in Haarlem's centre, with six reviews, and the dish to order is clear: the togarashi chicken bao (listed on our site as Korean fried chicken). It scored 7.92 in April 2025 and 8.56 in October 2026, when it came back on a bun: a whole crispy chicken breast, spicy and savoury sauce, slaw and spring onion. The breakfast sandwich (8.29) and the pancakes with jam, strawberries and cream (8.21) also did well. Skip the çılbır (5: cold eggs, runny yoghurt) and the smoked beef starter (6.15, too salty).

The famous Haarlem sandwich shop with the queue outside. Two reviews, two different results. The Mediterraneo (turnip greens, mozzarella, sun-dried tomato) scored 7.04: homemade bread, a great combination. The salami version scored 5.83: good crunchy bread and a fair size for €7, but a sauce on the bottom that did not work.

Three reviews in May 2025. The eggs Florentine scored 7.67: fluffy English muffin, eggs poached as they should be, with spinach and mushrooms (avocado is €3 extra). The banana pancakes got 6.17, not fluffy at all. The roast beef sandwich got 4.5: cold beef, plain untoasted bread and far too much mustard.

A fish shop that fries hamsi (Black Sea anchovies) to order: 8.79. The €20 is the price per kilo, not per portion. The fish was well cleaned and well fried, topped with spicy peppers and olives, which is not how it is done in Turkey, and the critic liked the twist. Tell them when you will pick it up and they will have it ready. The critic, after six years in Haarlem, had no idea you could get hamsi here.

The çılbır scored 7.25, the best çılbır score in Haarlem: pomegranate and pistachio lift it, but it was too spicy for the critic and the wrap on the side was ordinary.

Eight reviews, the most of any place in Haarlem, and a wide spread from 9 down to 5. The scrambled eggs on toast scored 9 and the eggs Florentine 8.75 and 7.71 on two visits (lemony spinach, rich hollandaise, one egg slightly overcooked). The çılbır landed at 6.71 and 6.63: good ingredients, but no garlic in the yoghurt and eggs that were not properly poached. The pancakes (5) needed sugar somewhere and the oatmeal (5.38) was not warm enough. Order the eggs. Dogs are welcome.

The acılı ezme (5.79) was spoiled by chilli sauce in what should be a simple chopped salad. The patatas bravas (4.25) came from the oven with cheese and curry sauce, nothing like the original. For Turkish food in Haarlem, Gusto Lahmacun scored far higher.
