PIP Deli wins on eggs. The scrambled eggs scored 9: the eggs were what the reviewer hoped for, the bread well toasted and the salad dressing good. Its eggs Florentine scored 8.75 on one visit and 7.71 on another: fresh, lemony spinach and a rich hollandaise, with one egg slightly overcooked the second time. Hare of the Dog's version (7.67) has a fluffy English muffin, spinach and mushrooms, and eggs poached as they should be.

Our critics know this dish well, and the same three things kept coming up: the eggs must be properly poached and warm, the yoghurt needs garlic, and it should hold its shape rather than run. Nancy's came closest (7.25) with pomegranate and pistachio on top, but it was too spicy for the critic. PIP Deli scored 6.71 and 6.63 (no garlic, overcooked eggs) and Frenchie 5 (cold eggs, runny yoghurt). The best çılbır we have in the area is in Amsterdam: see Turkish food in Amsterdam.

Frenchie's pancakes scored 8.21: hot, well cooked, with a slightly sour jam, fresh strawberries and homemade cream. Hare of the Dog's banana pancakes (6.17) were not fluffy, and PIP Deli's (5) were fluffy but plain, with unsweetened cream and a sour jam. PIP's warm oatmeal (5.38) was not warm enough. We have no Dutch pannenkoek review in Haarlem yet.

The almond croissant with chocolate at Jules coffee & concept scored 8.17, the best croissant in Haarlem. The pistachio versions did badly: the pistachio swirl at Jules Bakery (5) lacked cream, and the pistachio croissant at Anne&Max (4.83) did not taste fresh at midday. Away from croissants, the banana bread (8.29) and raspberry cruffin (8) at Mogador and the pastel de nata at A Loja (8.29) are all safe picks with a coffee.

Frenchie's breakfast sandwich scored 8.29: tasty and a little spicy, though the reviewer found €16 steep. The roast beef sandwich at Hare of the Dog scored 4.5: cold beef, untoasted bread and far too much mustard.
