Mekici

Mekici are popular North Macedonian fritters consisting of flour, salt, baking powder, eggs, yeast, milk, and water. Once the dough is prepared, it is deep-fried in hot oil until mekici develop a golden-brown color on the exterior. The fritters can be made at home or bought in bakeries. Their flavor is similar to that of doughnuts. Customarily, when a baby is born, the grandmother should prepare mekici to celebrate the birth.
