U' pituni or pidone is a traditional street food originating from Messina. The pidone (python) is made from a thin half-moon shaped dough consisting of flour, lard, water, and wine. The dough is stuffed with tuma cheese, anchovies, black pepper, tomatoes, and escarole, then folded and deep fried. Once browned, the pidone is placed on paper towels so that it loses some of the oil.

It can be served as a small snack, for breakfast or lunch. The ball-shaped dough is made from salt, yeast, and flour. When served at a South African braai, vetkoek is often served with boerewors, a traditional sausage. You can also serve them as they are, or with a cup of tea on the side.

Wu gok are traditional dumplings originating from China, and they&rsquo;re often served as a part of dim sum. In order to prepare the dumplings, taro root is steamed, mashed, stuffed with the fillings, and deep-fried. The dough for wrapping the filling is made with a combination of taro root, flour or wheat starch, lard, salt, sugar, and baking soda. The filling contains Chinese mushrooms, shrimp, onions, garlic, and ground pork that&rsquo;s been marinated in soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and five-spice powder. There&rsquo;s also a thickening sauce made with a mixture of chicken bouillon, sugar, rice wine, cornstarch, and salt. Once stuffed, the dumplings are deep-fried until golden and crispy.

A traditional dish of the Cantonese cuisine, crispy fried chicken consists of chicken that is first steamed and dried, then deep-fried in a special way so that the skin remains extremely crunchy, and the meat underneath gets tender. The chicken is steamed with spices such as cinnamon, Sichuan pepper, ginger, anise, and nutmeg. Later, it usually gets drizzled over with a combination of sugar and vinegar, helping the skin achieve its typical crispiness in the process. According to tradition, crispy fried chicken is a dish that should be eaten at night, while it is also regularly consumed at most Chinese wedding feasts. It is usually accompanied by two side dishes: prawn crackers and pepper salt.

General Tso&rsquo;s chicken is a Chinese-American sweet and spicy dish consisting of chicken dices that are first deep-fried, then stir-fried together with ginger, garlic, scallions, and hot chili peppers in a sauce made from sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and rice wine. Although named after General Tso Tsungtang, the dish has no real-life connection with him. The dish is most likely a descendant of a simple Hunanese chicken dish, and two immigrant chefs, Chinese and Taiwanese - respectively, claim to be its inventors. The sweetness and spiciness of the dish can be adjusted according to one's taste, and the dish is served with either steamed or fried rice.
