One of the staples of the Southern U.S. cuisine called chicken fried steak contains no chicken at all, contrary to what one might think upon seeing the name of the dish. It consists of a thin, breaded, and fried cut of beef that is traditionally served with a side of mashed potatoes and drizzled with cream gravy. The dish got its name due to the fact that the method of preparation is very similar to that of fried chicken. Originally, the first recipes for batter-fried steaks had appeared in Southern cookbooks during the early 1800s. In the old days, the cut of beef was inexpensive and tough, usually round steak, but today many restaurants use more expensive cuts such as tenderloin and rib-eye. It is believed that the dish stems from German immigrants who brought an Austrian dish called Wiener schnitzel to Texas, a meal that is quite similar to chicken fried steak. What started as making use of meat of questionable quality evolved into a unique Texas delicacy, a perfect combination of meat, grease, and batter.

Chicken kabouli, kabuli, or qabooli is a traditional rice dish that is similar to a biryani. It consists of basmati rice that is flavored with an Omani masala blend of whole or ground spices such as cardamom, coriander, cloves, and cinnamon. The aromatic rice is combined with fried onions and pieces of chicken, which are typically boiled with spices and then fried. This dish is often garnished with various ingredients such as sultanas, dates, chickpeas, potatoes, and nuts such as almonds. Chicken kabouli is typically consumed as a main dish for lunch.

Chicken kathi roll is a variety of kathi roll prepared with chicken as the key ingredient. It's a typical street food originating from Kolkata, consisting of flatbreads such as roti or paratha that are filled with marinated and saut&eacute;ed chicken pieces. Each flatbread is first lined with an egg that's cracked on top of it before it's spread and cooked. The chicken is marinated in spices such as turmeric, chili powder, cumin, coriander, lemon juice, salt, and mustard oil. Once prepared, the stuffing is mixed with sliced onions, cucumbers, grated carrots, hot chili peppers, and coriander. Sauces such as tomato sauce and green chili sauce are also added to the mix, which is wrapped with a flatbread and served hot. If desired, serve chicken kathi rolls with a green chutney on the side. There is also a very similar variety of kathi roll called chicken kathi roll with egg, and the name speaks for itself.

Chicken lahori is a traditional chicken curry hailing from the city of Lahore. It is typically made with chicken pieces that are stir-fried with a variety of spices, plain yogurt, onions, garlic, ginger, and tomatoes, and then simmered with water or chicken stock until the meat is fully cooked. Typical spices include turmeric powder, coriander, hot green chilis, black peppercorns, red chili powder, cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, and garam masala powder. This flavor-packed curry can be enriched with potatoes for added consistency and a more filling meal. Chicken lahori is usually topped with fresh cilantro leaves and accompanied by rice or naan on the side. This spicy chicken curry is a common Pakistani street food item and a staple in Lahori households.

This dish is a specialty from Micronesia made with marinated chicken that is baked with chunks of pineapple, grated coconut, and onions. The chicken is typically soaked in a marinade made with soy sauce, ginger, and the liquid from canned pineapple. The marinated chicken is then topped with pineapple chunks, chopped onions, and grated coconut, and baked in the oven. Juicy and tender, chicken Micronesia has a sweet and savory flavor with mild aromas of coconut and pineapple. The dish is traditionally accompanied by steamed rice.

Comforting and hearty, chicken pot pie is an American and Canadian savory pie that has a top crust made with flaky pastry and a filling of chicken and vegetables such as peas, potatoes, onions, and carrots. There is no set recipe, and other ingredients can be included. As far as method goes, the pie can be prepared in the oven, on the stovetop, or in an iron pie over an open fire. Also, although it's traditionally considered that chicken pot pie only has a top crust, it's common to find double-crusted ones. Still, chicken pot pie is just one kind of pot pie, albeit the most famous one, and there are pot pies with beef, lamb, and turkey. Pot pie is a popular dish with a long and vivid history, dating back to the Roman Empire when it was regularly served at banquets. The ancient custom of pot pie was revived in 16th-century England when cooks used to make meat pies with tiny, gooseberry-stuffed birds on the inside. The popularity of pot pies soon spread to other countries, so in the 19th century, Americans became obsessed with a pot pie that featured robins in it. Today, pot pie is an American tradition and comfort food of the first order. It even has its own day, known as the National Great American Pot Pie Day, celebrated annually on September 23rd.

As the name suggests, the star ingredient in this traditional Moroccan dish is chicken, preferably bone-in chicken cuts such as legs, thighs, or drumsticks. Like other tajine dishes, this chicken variety is also prepared in the eponymous conical cooking vessel. The meat is neatly arranged with various vegetables such as onions, carrots, tomatoes, or potatoes, and the whole dish is usually seasoned with cumin, saffron, parsley, or coriander. Typical variations also may include preserved lemons, olives, almonds, or apricots. Chicken tajine is usually served with bread on the side.

Chicken tenders is a dish of breaded and fried strips of chicken coming from the pectoralis minor, located underneath the chicken breast. The meat is more tender, and when properly prepared, it should be moist and more tender than chicken fingers, which are made from chicken breast. Once coated in breadcrumbs, the tenders are deep-fried in hot oil. They can be served as an appetizer, side dish, or main course, and common accompaniments include dips such as mayonnaise, ketchup, ranch, honey mustard, and barbecue sauce. Chicken tenders are often served with french fries and coleslaw on the side. Interestingly, a restaurant called Puritan Backroom in Manchester, New Hampshire claims that they invented the chicken tenders.

Chicken tikka masala is a British dish influeneced by Indian cuisine, consisting of marinated, tandoor-cooked chicken pieces that are served in a spiced tomato-cream sauce. The origins are still debated &ndash; some claim that it was invented in Glasgow in the 1970s by a Pakistani chef Ali Ahmed Aslam who added his tomato-cream soup into chicken tikka in order to please a customer, and others claim that the dish is simply a variation on Indian butter chicken or chicken tikka that's adapted to suit the British tastes. Nowadays, chicken tikka masala is even considered the country's national dish, and Foreign Secretary Robin Cook proclaimed chicken tikka masala a symbol of modern multicultural Britain in 2001.

Named after the Mount Vesuvius volcano near Naples, chicken Vesuvio is a specialty of Chicago's Italian-American restaurants. The dish is made with chicken on the bone, potatoes, olive oil, white wine, garlic, and oregano and finished with green peas. Lemon juice is also often a common ingredient in chicken Vesuvio recipes. In Chicago, this cooking technique is sometimes applied to other foods as well, like steak Vesuvio, pork chops Vesuvio, or even just Vesuvio potatoes. Although the origins of this Italian-American classic remain unknown, some speculate that chicken Vesuvio got its name after the fact that adding wine to the oil causes the dish to smoke like a volcano, while others suggest that it might have been popularized by the Vesuvio restaurant, which operated in Chicago in the 1930s.

The Japanese chikuzenni is a dish which combines chicken and vegetables that are slowly simmered in a flavorful broth infused with soy sauce, mirin, and sake. Originating from the Japanese Fukuoka region, known in the past as Chikuzen, it is usually made with shiitake mushrooms, konnyaku, and decoratively sliced root vegetables such as taro, burdock, lotus root, and carrots. Traditionally served on New Year&rsquo;s Day, chikuzenni is also commonly prepared as an everyday dish in many Japanese households and it is often included as a side dish in bento boxes.

Chiles en nogada or stuffed poblano chiles in walnut sauce is a star dish of the Mexican Independence Day, celebrated every year on September 16. Poblano chiles are large, heart-shaped peppers with thick walls, great for stuffing, and characterized by their flavors which can range from mild to hot. The dish was invented in 1821 by nuns from the city of Puebla who wanted to make a meal using local ingredients that were in season, as a symbol of appreciation for the Mexican General Augustin de Iturbide. It consists of a mixture of ground pork meat and dried fruits, stuffed in poblano chiles that are covered with a creamy walnut sauce and decorated with parsley and pomegranate seeds on top. The dish is available only during that short season of the year, specifically in September, when the chiles are the greenest, the pomegranates ripe and red, and the walnuts just picked from the trees. Chiles en nogada boasts its unusual ingredients for a reason - they represent the colors of the Mexican flag - white, red and green, making the dish as patriotic as it can be. When consumed, the dish releases intense aromas of cinnamon, apple, pear, walnuts, and almonds, contrasted with the strong flavors of pork, garlic and onion, complementing each other in this delicious, festive dish.

Chiles veracruzanos is a traditional dish originating from Veracruz and consisting of stuffed chipotle peppers. The dish is usually made with a combination of dried chipotles, onions, garlic, tomatoes, olives, capers, raisins, oil, eggs, flour, salt, pepper, and chopped meat such as beef, pork, or chicken. The onions are saut&eacute;ed, then cooked with the tomatoes, garlic, olives, raisins, and capers. The meat is added to the pan, seasoned with salt and pepper, and the combination is then cooked over low heat until it becomes slightly dry. The soaked chipotle chili peppers are stuffed with the mixture, sprinkled with flour, dipped in egg wash, and deep-fried on both sides until slightly golden. Once done, these Veracruz-style stuffed peppers are typically served with white rice and beans on the side for a complete meal.

Chili burger is a variety of hamburger consisting of a bun and a meat patty that is topped with chili con carne, although the chili might also be served on the side. The hamburger is served open-faced in some places, and it is often topped with cheese and onions, while fries are usually served as an accompaniment. It is believed that chili burger was invented in the 1920s by Thomas M. DeForest in Los Angeles.

Although some may think that chili con carne is an authentic Mexican dish, it is actually an original American dish, made only in a few places in Mexico in order to cater to the tourists. If the dish were Mexican, it would still be a staple on the Mexican menus throughout the country, since traditional dishes do not go away that easily in Mexico. Chili con carne is a meat-based stew consisting of finely chopped beef, hot chiles, seasonings, and water, although the ingredients that go in a chili are a subject of endless debates. Purists insist that there are no tomatoes or beans in a real chili, although many others beg to differ. The earliest evidence of chili con carne can be found in J.C.Clopper's document, who visited San Antonio in 1826 and wrote about this poor man's dish where chile peppers were stewed together with tiny pieces of meat. Today, chili con carne is a wildly popular dish throughout America, with variations such as Tex-Mex, New Mexico, and Cincinnati chili. There are also numerous chili cook-offs in the country, attracting thousands of participants each year.

Chilorio is a Sinaloan dish consisting of fried pulled pork meat that is cooked in chili sauce and spices such oregano, garlic, and cumin. Originally, it was used as a way to preserve meat, but today it is usually used as a filling for numerous Mexican specialties such as tacos or enchiladas. If chilorio is served as a main dish, it is traditionally accompanied by salsa, guacamole, Mexican rice, or refried beans on the side.

The term chim chum refers to a traditional Thai dish as well as the earthenware pot in which the dish is cooked. Like most burgers, chimichurris is served in a bun and topped with a variety of ingredients such as mayonnaise, shredded cabbage, tomatoes, and onions. It is said that the real Dominican chimichurri will always be served with a glass of cold, frosty beer on the side.
