The index sendvič (lit. index sandwich) is a popular, hearty sandwich from Novi Sad, Serbia, particularly loved by students due to its affordability and filling nature. The sandwich is typically made with a large, soft white bread roll (kifla in Serbia) and filled with a combination of savory ingredients. The classic indeks sandwich usually is filled with layers of ham, cheese, and mushrooms, all topped with sour cream, ketchup, and mayonnaise. The sandwich is then often grilled or baked until the cheese melts, creating a warm, crispy, and gooey treat. Variations may also include additional ingredients like pickles, different seasonings, types of cheese, and vegetables. But in general, the sandwich is customizable as when ordering, one chooses what he or she would like in the sandwich. It is named "indeks" (index) after the booklet that university students in Serbia use to record their grades, as it was invented as a cheap and filling meal fitting for a student's budget. It became a symbol of student life in Novi Sad, but these days, it is eaten by everyone, and it's a popular street food.

One says that is was invented by Al Ferreri (the owner of Al's Beef restaurant) and his family at the start of World War II. They invented it in response to big Italian weddings that needed to stretch a small amount of food a long way. Another theory says that the sandwich is a version of the French dip, introduced in Los Angeles in 1918. According to Pat Bruno, a critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, it was invented by a man named Tony who worked in a Greek diner and messed around with the French dip recipe, creating the Italian beef sandwich in the process. The third theory gives credit to Pasquale Scala, a supplier of Italian beef in Chicago, who invented it as a way to help consumers to stretch their dollar during the Great Depression. Regardless of the origin of the sandwich, it is still a staple of Chicago's cuisine, found at numerous restaurants and hot dog stands across the city.

The sandwich is one of Jerusalem's most popular street foods, and it is believed that it's been invented at the Mahane Yehuda Market, although many local restaurants claim the dish as their own.

The most probable theory says that the sandwich was invented by Coqu&iacute; Feliciano and Jorge Mu&ntilde;oz at Pl&aacute;tano Loco restaurant in Aguada, Puerto Rico, and Figueroa probably read about it, which inspired him to make another version in Chicago.

Kathi roll is an Indian street food dish hailing from Kolkata. It consists of skewered and roasted kebab meat that is wrapped in paratha flatbread. Some say that the dish was invented because the British didn't want to eat kebabs with their hands, so an ingenious person at Nizam's restaurant rolled the meat in a paratha. Initially, kathi roll was prepared with eggs and chutney along with the meat. Typically, the cook will roll the dough on a tawa, crack an egg onto it, then add the fillings. Kathi roll is traditionally wrapped in paper and served piping hot. In the 1960s, the cooks at Nizam's replaced the metal skewers with bamboo skewers, giving the dish its name, kathi roll, as kathi means stick in Bengali. Nowadays, this tasty wrap can also be found in cities such as New York City and London.

Khao phan phak is a soft rice sheet that has been traditionally, and almost exclusively, prepared in the Laplae district of Uttaradit province. Consisting of a mixture of fermented rice flour and sesame seeds, this dish uses a unique cooking method that involves pouring a thin layer of the batter into a round shape onto what is called a steamer, which is basically a piece of thin cloth stretched over a pot of boiling water. While steaming, the rice sheet can optionally be topped with an egg. Once done, the concoction is usually finished with a variety of ingredients such as stir-fried vegetables, glass noodles, sesame seeds, chili peppers, and herbs before it is carefully folded and consumed. Reflecting the Laotian influence in traditional Thai cuisine, khao phan phak is not paper-thin as most rice wrappers tend to be - instead, it closely resembles a thin and soft noodle. A regional specialty from Alberta, kubie burger is a type of Canadian hamburger consisting of a Ukrainian garlic sausage called kubie that is pressed and then served in a bun or a bread roll similarly to a hamburger. The name of this burger, kubie, comes from the Albertan abbreviation of the word kubasa or kielbasa, which is the corrupted name of kovbasa, meaning sausage in Ukrainian.
