Mexico

Mexican enmoladas are essentially enchiladas covered in mole sauce. The enchiladas might be filled with a wide array of ingredients, but they are most often filled with chicken and crumbled cheese. The tortillas are first fried, dipped into the warm mole sauce, then filled with chicken and cheese. If needed, more mole sauce is spooned over the enmoladas. Before serving, enmoladas can be garnished with sliced onions and chopped coriander. This tasty Mexican dish is a great example of using leftover mole sauce for the creation of a new meal.

Even though it's hard to pinpoint the exact point in time when Fenway franks were invented, it is believed that they were first sold soon after the park's 1912 opening. Since then, these delicious hot dogs have become popular fan favorites at baseball games and a true Boston staple. Unlike other ballpark hot dogs which are typically either grilled or steamed, Fenway franks are boiled and grilled, then placed in a split bread roll and consumed plain or topped with various relishes or mustard. This hot dog variety is characterized by its bold flavors because the meat is flavored with garlic, onion, and mustard, and the sausages are then cooled using a special process in order to preserve the juiciness.

Chicago's take on the classic bacon-wrapped, deep-fried danger dog is called Francheezie - an all-beef hot dog split down the middle, and filled with either American cheese, Cheddar, or Velveeta; before being deep-fried. Just like the classic Chicago-style hot dog, Francheezie is also served in a poppy seed bun. Alternatively, the cheese can be added as a topping after frying, while other toppings include yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, dill pickle spears, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers and a dash of celery salt.

Fry fry is a street food item from Sierra Leone. It refers to a variety of fried food (plus spaghetti, almost always) such as akara, gari cakes, fried plantains, french fries, bongo (smoked herring), and fried chicken. The dish is traditionally served with bread, usually the fluffy fula bread, and the whole meal is accompanied by hard-boiled eggs and a spicy pepper sauce. Fry fry can be found on the streets of most cities in Sierra Leone, be it day or night.

Garnacha is a Mexican dish originating from Oaxaca, in an area known as the Isthmus. The dish consists of a small masa dough disk that is fried in lard, then topped with stewed shredded meat, onions, salsa, queso fresco, and repollo &ndash; a combination of vinegar and cabbage. Of course, chili peppers can also be added to the toppings, if desired. Nowadays, garnachas are a common street food in the region, but they are also a staple of the velas &ndash; a festival that celebrates the harvest season.

Gua bao is the famous Taiwanese braised pork belly bun. It consists of soft steamed buns filled with tender pieces of pork belly, braised in a mixture of soy sauce and red wine, generously seasoned with five-spice powder. Other essential complements include sour pickled mustard greens, chopped cilantro, and a sprinkle of lightly sweetened peanut powder. Gua bao is one of the favorite Taiwanese snacks, usually sold by street vendors at popular Taiwanese night markets.

This hot dog variety is a street food staple in Washington D.C., made with a mildly smoked beef and pork sausage in a natural casing as the key ingredient. This sausage is thicker than the average hot dog sausage, the meat is ground more coarsely, and it has a spicy kick due to red pepper flakes that are dispersed throughout the meat. The sausage is placed on a split roll, then topped with chili, or sometimes with mustard and diced onions. There are numerous theories regarding the name of this hot dog &ndash; many people say that it's smoked halfway, some claim that it's cut in half when grilled, while others claim that the name is derived from the fact that the sausage is made with equal amounts of pork and beef. Regardless of the name, half-smoke remains a beloved street food item found at numerous hot dog carts in the city.

Halv special is a Swedish hot dog variety that consists of a standard hot dog, but with a twist &ndash; it's covered in mashed potatoes. The word halv means half, but there's also a version called hel special, with hel meaning whole, referring to the fact that there are two sausages instead of just the one. The hot dogs are often additionally topped with condiments such as ketchup, mustard, pickles, and roasted onions. Sometimes, the customers can decide whether the sausage(s) will be grilled or boiled (or perhaps one of each in hel special). Halv and hel special are commonly paired with chocolate milk called Pucko.

Humitas is a dish popular throughout South America, especially in Chile, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. The dish consists of corn cakes that are cooked in corn husks. In Argentina, humitas are usually made with corn, onions, and spices, and depending on the region, milk, red peppers, cheese, and spring onions might also be added to the combination, which is wrapped in corn husks and boiled. In Ecuador, humitas are steamed and are usually made with ground corn, eggs, onions, and variable spices. The Chilean version adds basil and butter to corn and onions, and their humitas are boiled or baked. In Peru and Bolivia, people also prepare sweet humitas with added cinnamon and raisins. Regardless of the varieties, humitas can be found at almost all corner stores and food stalls throughout these countries.

Italian hot dog was invented in Newark, New Jersey and consists of large loaves of pizza bread (with a hole in the middle) which are quartered, sliced, then filled with deep-fried sausages, onions, peppers, and crispy fried potatoes that are soft in the middle. The tender pizza bread holds all of the ingredients together, soaks up some of the grease, and is typically baked by local Italian bakers, hence the name of this unique hot dog variety.

Knysza is a thick, semicircular bread roll filled with various ingredients, drenched in garlic sauce, mayonnaise sauce, or hot sauce, and topped with roasted onions. A typical Polish street food, it is found in a vegetarian, meat, and cheese version. Vegetarian knysza is slathered with sauce and filled with vegetables, usually cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, canned corn, pickled cucumbers, and the mandatory roasted onions. The meat version is the same as the vegetarian with the addition of sausages, pork or chicken chops, salmon, or tuna fish, while the cheese version consists of vegetarian knysza with grated cheese. Mostly associated with Wrocław, the dish is also sold in other cities throughout Poland, including Krak&oacute;w, Zabrze, and Białystok. The blend of different flavors and the crunchiness of the vegetables, combined in a unique bread roll, make this dish a true pleasure for the taste buds.

K&ograve;ng-&Ocirc;an, also known as bouncy meatballs, are typical Taiwanese street food items. These Taiwanese meatballs usually consist of highly seasoned, ground fatty pork mixture combined with chopped shiitake mushrooms, tapioca starch, baking powder, and egg whites. The simmered meatballs are served piping hot, typically in a clear broth, and the dish is then garnished with chopped celery, cilantro, and fried shallots, or accompanied by noodles. These authentic Taiwanese meatballs are also sold in numerous Chinese markets throughout the U.S.

Kottu is one of the national dishes of Sri Lanka, a favorite among locals and tourists throughout the country. It employs crucial elements of national Sri Lankan cuisine: roti flatbread, aromatic spices, crispy vegetables, and tasty meat. Each kottu is prepared individually on a hot griddle. The process starts with spices such as ginger, garlic, pandan leaves, curry, chili, cardamom, and cinnamon, which are shortly fried to release all their intense aromas. The spices are topped and mixed with carrots, scallions, leeks, or other vegetables, while pieces of sliced roti are added on top. Traditionally, kottu is topped with eggs which are used to hold the ingredients together, and most varieties of the dish also employ meat, usually generously seasoned slices of beef or chicken. When all ingredients are placed on a flat sizzling griddle, traditional long metal utensils are used to slice (and incorporate) them into kottu. In the process, the metal appliances make loud sounds, which are recognized as a universal music that can be heard every evening on Sri Lankan streets.

In Boston, hot dogs are typically served steamed, unlike many other hot dog varieties which are grilled. These hot dogs are often served with baked beans, a true Bostonian staple. The buns should not be large, and they are traditionally cut on the side, so they are thinner and don't overpower the hot dog. Sometimes, the buns are additionally griddled with butter. The most common toppings for Boston hot dogs include mustard, ketchup, chopped onions, and picalilli &ndash; a chunky relish made with pickled vegetables and various spices.

One of the street foods that are synonymous with Chicago, the Maxwell Street Polish sandwich is said to have been created in 1943 by a Macedonian immigrant Jimmy Stefanovic who operated a hot dog stand - now called Jim's Original - back then located in Chicago's old Maxwell Street market district. Served on a bun, the grilled or fried Polish sausage is topped with grilled onions, yellow mustard and optional pickled green sport peppers. Soon after its invention, Maxwell Street Polish grew to be one of the Windy City's most popular local fare, and remains a staple of its hot dog stands until this day.

Despite the name, Michigan hot dogs are practically unknown in Michigan. They are traditionally produced in New York State and Qu&eacute;bec. This tasty street food staple consists of a long steamed roll and a steamed hot dog sausage in natural casing, and the whole thing is topped with a meaty sauce called Michigan sauce, chopped onions, and occasionally, yellow mustard. The sauce is thick and chunky, typically made with tomatoes, vinegar, brown sugar, and cabbage, while the onions may be ordered with or buried (under the sauce).

These flavorful tacos originate from San Francisco's Mission district, famous for its Latin community and great burritos. Mission-style tacos are typically filled with carne asada meat, cooked beans, refried beans, lettuce, cheese, and a variety of different salsas. It is recommended to serve them with radish slices and lime wedges on the side for the best eating experience.

Mixtas are Guatemalan version of hot dogs, sold from numerous food carts throughout the country. What makes mixtas unique is the fact that the sausages are not placed in buns, but in tortillas. The dish is always made with fresh and inexpensive ingredients, so mixtas are usually filled with lime-dressed coleslaw, onions, diced tomatoes, guacamole, and green chiles.

Montr&eacute;al hot dog is a Canadian hot dog variety consisting of a steamed sausage in a soft, steamed bun, topped with chopped onions, coleslaw, mustard, and some kind of relish. If the hot dog is steamed, it's called a steam&eacute; or stim&eacute;, but it can also be grilled or toasted until crisp, when it's called toast&eacute; or toastie, but toasties are slightly more expensive and less popular than steamies. When the toppings are selected, and they most often are, it is called an all-dressed hot dog, and it is said that it is the best way to enjoy this Montr&eacute;al delicacy. Despite the city's ban on street carts that had been operational for 66 years and was lifted in 2013, Montr&eacute;al hot dog remains an important street food staple, and today it can be found at numerous street corners throughout the city.

Navajo tacos, Indian tacos, or frybread tacos is a traditional dish originating from the Midwest and Intermountain region states such as Arizona, South Dakota, and Oklahoma. These tacos are made with Indian fry bread that's topped with a combination of ingredients such as ground beef, beans, shredded lettuce, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and tomatoes. The dish was created in 1864 using flour, salt, and lard that was given to the Navajos of Arizona when they were forced to flee their homeland and march on foot to New Mexico, a journey known as the Long Walk. The frybread is nowadays topped with a wide array of ingredients mentioned above, sometimes with even more additional items (the more, the better) such as pico de gallo, salsa, black olives, sliced avocado, and green onions.
