Ladob is a Seychellois dish based on plantains, breadfruit, and cassava. It can be prepared in sweet or savory versions. The dessert version is prepared by boiling plantains or cassava in coconut milk, along with nutmeg, vanilla, and sugar as flavorings. When properly made, the dessert has a tender and creamy texture. The savory version uses salted fish boiled in coconut milk with plaintains, cassava, nutmeg, and salt. Ladob is very popular throughout the island, and it is served either hot or cold.

This American classic is said to have been created toward the end of the 19th century by Florence and Nina Ottelengui who ran Charleston&rsquo;s Lady Baltimore Tea Room. In 1906, when Owen Wister wrote a romance novel by the same name in which he poetically described this luscious dessert, the cake gained unmatched popularity and has been a Southern favorite ever since. Lady Baltimore is made of several layers of white sponge cake and a rich, marshmallow-like divinity frosting mixed with chopped nuts and dried fruits like raisins, figs, and dates. Also, apart from the egg-whites-only Lady cake, there is a version called Lord Baltimore which is made with leftover yolks and filled with toasted almonds, crushed macaroons, and candied cherries.

Danish lagkage is a type of round layered cake that is usually served on special occasions. It consists of at least three layers of sponge intertwined with pastry creams, fresh fruit, or fruit preserves. The sponges can be made with various cake batters, and the whole cake is richly decorated with whipped cream and additional fresh fruits. In Denmark, lagkage is usually the main dessert served at numerous birthday parties, but also an indispensable part of every important celebration or festivity.

The world-famous Australian culinary icon Lamington consists of a sponge cake that is dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with finely desiccated coconut. The cake is believed to have been created by accident when Lord Lamington's maid accidentally dropped his favorite cake in melted chocolate. Lamington, the eighth Governor of Queensland, suggested that the cake should be sprinkled with coconut in order to avoid the mess while consuming it - and the erroneous cake was proclaimed a massive success by all. Today, the cake is extremely popular due to its climate suitability, as it lasts longer in the heat when it's cut in bite-sized squares and covered in coconut. It is also a staple of fundraising events due to the fact that it can be easily made in large quantities. The cake can also be found throughout Australia and New Zealand in numerous supermarkets, caf&eacute;s, and bakeries. The cake is also popular in Balkan and Eastern Europe - in Croatia, the same cake (without any fruit jam whatsoever) is called čupavci, and it's a Christmas staple. In Slovakia, the cake is called kokosov&eacute; ježe, in Poland it's known as kostka kokosowa, while the Hungarian name is k&oacute;kuszkocka.

Lane cake (also known as prize cake and Alabama Lane cake) is a sponge cake filled with a combination of coconut, raisins, custard, and bourbon. To make things even better, it's often topped with a fluffy frosting. The cake was invented by Emma Rylander Lane from Clayton, Alabama. She presented it at a county fair in Colombus, Georgia, where she won first prize, hence the alternative name &ndash; prize cake. She published the recipe for this decadent dessert in her book Some Good Things to Eat in 1898. Nowadays, there are many twists on the Lane cake, and it is a staple at dinners, receptions, and weddings in the American south. The cake also gained literary fame when it was mentioned in Harper Lee's famous book To Kill a Mockingbird.

Langley wakes are traditional English cookies that are often baked for annual wakes or fairs in Derbyshire villages during the summer months of July and August. La p&egrave;ca del Salbaneo is a traditional dessert from the Vicenza foothills region, created to showcase three ingredients of the area: Marostica cherries (Ciliegia di Marostica I.G.P.), Torcolato wine (D.O.C. The next layer is a soft cherry puree, followed by a fragrant crumble made with corn flour and Torcolato wine. Lapis legit is a traditional layered cake originating from Indonesia, where it's been made under the influence of Dutch cuisine. The cake consists of 18 to 30 separately baked layers of egg yolks, sugar, flour, butter, and spices such as mace, nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon. It's essentially the Indonesian version of the European spit cake &ndash; however, it's not baked on a rotating spit, but in square-shaped baking pans. It's important not to confuse this cake with kuih lapis (or kue lapis), because lapis legit is baked and not steamed as kue lapis. In Indonesia, there are many versions of lapis legit, and the cakes are sometimes enriched with additional ingredients such as prunes, raisins, almonds, cashews, cheese, or chocolate. In the Netherlands, the cake is known as spekkoek.

Latteruolo, also known as casadello, is a traditional dessert from the Romagna region of Italy. It is a simple, custard-like sweet made with milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla, often baked in a shell of pasta matta (a basic dough of flour and water), but that is not a must. Historically, farmers would prepare this dessert as a gift to their landowners for the Corpus Domini celebration on June 10th. If made without pasta matta, the dessert is gently cooked in a bain-marie at a low temperature for several hours, resulting in a creamy, aromatic treat typically served in slices, reflecting its rustic, peasant origins.

The term lebkuchen covers a wide variety of different types of honey or ginger-flavored cookies which are traditionally baked on oblaten (thin wafers), and glazed or coated with either dark chocolate or sugar icing. Additional ingredients may include various spices like cloves, aniseed, nutmeg, coriander, and cardamom, with different types of nuts or candied fruit. Best-known varieties of this cookie include the heart-shaped lebkuchenherzen which are often decorated with icing and different inscriptions, the German version of the gingerbread man called honigkuchenpferd (lit. honey cake horse), and hexenhausel (lit. witch&rsquo;s house), while the most famous is the Nurnberger Elisenlebkuchen. In Germany, the earliest records date back to the year 1296 and the city of Ulm, and the year 1395 and the city of Nurnberg. The area itself was an intersection of many trade routes that supplied it with spices necessary and thus helped to keep the production of lebkuchen alive and thriving. In 1996, the Nurnberger lebkuchen was granted the protected designation of origin (PDO) status which applies to all the lebkuchen produced in the city of Nurnberg.

Leche flan is a Filipino dessert that is essentially a caramel custard consisting of milk, sugar, and eggs, with the addition of vanilla flavoring. Traditionally, it's oval-shaped due to the use of tin molds called llaneras. It is recommended to serve it chilled and coated with leftover caramel syrup. Leche flan is very popular at numerous Filipino celebrations and social gatherings. Originally, it was brought over to the Philippines during the Spanish colonization, so it is believed that it has origins in the regions on the border of Spain and France. Today, apart from being consumed on its own as a sweet treat, pieces of leche flan can also be added to halo-halo, another popular Filipino dessert.
